Exterior House Work, House and Acreage Restoration

Home Wreckers

For those of you unaware, earlier this fall we were suffering from theft in our home. No, nothing of “value” was stolen. Just my Black Walnuts.

It was a mystery. The Walnuts had begun to go missing by the dozen every night we left the house. I found no walnut remains anywhere. It was either a ghost or a very clever varmint.

Appears the latter is true.

While ripping off the old facia around the porch and the garage we stumbled upon a little home. Inside the facia were nuts. Peanuts, walnuts, garbage, twigs, even the most adorable little nest made out of fluffy insulation. The perfect bed for baby varmints.

We killed their home. The old soffit (which was actually a piece of siding….I was aghast) was torn out as we begin the process of putting up soffits and facia on the porch and garage to match the rest of the house.

The rest. This is actually what was in the soffit. Pretty good work, I'd say!

This process also involved straightening out the roof trusses. Because, apparently, whomever built the garage and porch didn’t take the time to cut the trusses at an angle, which just made the soffit at an angle instead of being plumb. Furthermore, the roof on the garage and the roof on the porch (which are connected by the soffit) are not level with each other. Because why would anyone want to make it easy?

(Side note: we have learned the name of the person who did all this remodeling incorrectly in the late 1960s and knowing his name makes me feel weird about complaining about it. This is obviously some type of psychological issue for me, I’m sure I will get over it).

So, here we are: the home wreckers for some squirrels and we try to right a home that was wrecked by somebody else.
